10 Best Canoe Accessories
Spending a day on the water is one of the most perfect ways to while away the hours – and get a little sun, burn a lot of calories, and make some beautiful memories. Canoeing is a low impact activity that improves fitness, strength, flexibility… and mood! What essential canoeing equipment do you need to make the most of your next paddle?
1. PFD.
A personal flotation device (PFD) is a must. In most states, you need to have an approved PFD on your watercraft. While adults do not have to necessarily wear them while on the water, children must. Before you head out, make sure you have a US Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, or III PFD.
2. Dry Bags.
Want to capture the gorgeous sunset at the end of your journey – or the perfect sunrise before you set out? For items that you do not want to get wet, you need the aptly named dry bags. From keys and phones to clothing and tents, you can find the right-sized dry bag for your gear.
3. Paddling Gloves.
Long trips lead to blistered, calloused hands. Good paddling gloves provide a barrier between your skin and your paddle, as well as the sun and cool weather. They’re comfy and one of the best canoe accessories you can pick up.
4. Water Footwear.
When canoeing, your footwear needs to be able to keep up. It should dry quickly, protect you from rocks and underwater hazards, provide comfort during portage, and be comfortable.
5. Appropriate Clothing.
If you’re paddling around a calm lake on a warm day, a t-shirt and shorts is more than acceptable attire! For longer journeys or those taken during rough, windy, or cooler days, opt for a dry suit or, at the least, a dry top.
6. Sunscreen.
A little Vitamin D is good for you – a lot is painful. Water reflects sunlight, and it’s too easy to get a sunburn. Pack some SPF and reapply as needed.
7. Bilge Pump/Sponge.
No one plans on capsizing during their canoeing adventures – but be prepared, nonetheless. A bilge pump or sponge allows you to bail out excess water to increase safety and comfort.
8. Built-for-Purpose Gear.
If you’re canoeing while enjoying fishing or camping, it’s important to have the right accessories. Whether it’s a rod holder or a kick-butt splash guard for rough waters, get the gear you need for your adventure.
9. Maps/GPS.
Know where you’re going. Phone-based GPS and Maps are great, but don’t forget to pack a waterproof map on your longer trips or those through unfamiliar territory.
10. Canoe Dock.
This essential canoeing equipment never makes it aboard your vessel. A safe, sturdy, solid canoe dock makes it easy to transition to the water and secure your craft when you are done for the day.
