Top 3 Dock Maintenance Tips
People who own boats often get so focused on their water-dwelling mode of transport that they forget about the dock! The combination of water, humidity, weather, and wear and tear can not only impact the aesthetics of the dock but can significantly reduce its lifespan. With a few simple maintenance tips, you can prolong the lifespan of your dock (your AccuDock may be the last one you ever need to buy!) and increase your enjoyment.
How to Maintain Your Dock
- Consider the material: Before you start the dock cleaning, know what material it is made from. The reason is that different dock materials require a different approach.
Pressure-treated lumber is widely used to construct docks and while cost-effective, it also requires intense labor and time. To ensure longevity of pressure-treated lumber, the wood should be sealed to prevent contact with moisture and prevent degradation or rotting.
Composite docks: today many docks are constructed using a combination of plastics, natural fibers, and wood. These composite docks are also insect and moisture resistant. Most of the composite docks have a surface layer of a special resin that protects the inner structure from decay and mildew. The one major benefit of composite docks is that they are much easier to maintain compared to hardwood.
- Check everything: Besides the boards, check the hardware, the bolts, nuts, and fasteners. Also, assess the stability of the ladder and steps. Do not ignore even a minor loose screw as it will lead to more pressure on other parts of the dock and suddenly become a major issue.
- Frequency of cleaning: experts recommend that to keep the dock in great condition, it should be cleaned at least once a year. The entire dock should be first inspected for signs of wear and tear and then all the stains should be scrubbed. In most cases, a rag, detergent, and water should do the trick. Use solutions and detergents that are EPA approved and biodegradable.
