How to Tie a Jet Ski to a Dock

There are times when you just want to paddle along a lazy river or float in a serene bay. And then there are times when you want to feel the wind in your hair and up the fun factor. Those times call for a jet ski. Is there a better way to spend a warm, sunny day? We didn’t think so! But fun aside, there are a few practical concerns to keep in mind as you take your baby out on the water. One of these is tying your personal watercraft (PWC) securely to a jet ski dock when you come back in.

Tips for Tying Your Jet Ski to a Dock

1. Make sure you have the right supplies. You will need dock lines for jet skis and fenders, which protect your boat from bumping into the sides of the dock. Remember, some docks may be higher (especially if they are designed for larger vessels); having longer lines (e.g., 12 foot) is helpful so you can reach the cleats on these types of docks.
2. Prepare for landing. When you come into dock, there are a lot of maneuvers you need to pull off at once! You have to protect the sides of your craft, tie up, and hold on so you don’t drift away. As you are approaching, prepare your gear. Get your fenders snapped on and lines ready (be sure not to let the ends of the line dangle into the water – you don’t want them to get sucked into the impeller). That way, when you get to the dock, you can more easily get your jet ski tied off.
3. Don’t leave your jet ski in the water for prolonged periods of time. Jet skis are made to move through the water like motorcycles on the open road. They’re just not made to sit in that water for extended periods. Salt and even freshwater will corrode your PWC and cause issues with performance, safety, and durability. Tying off and leaving your jet ski in the water for a few hours while you have lunch is fine. Leaving it overnight is ok. Leaving it for days: no. In this case, we recommend a jet ski dock.
